The Role of ICT in Transfering Experience between Projects

Abstract

Conditions regarding time; routines and systems; ICT systems for experience transfer; leadership, individual conditions; incentives and culture are identified by people working in projects as either restraining or promoting transfer of experience between projects. People strongly believe that computer systems will make experience transfer between projects work. This is, however, only valid for the people who have no experience with such systems. People who have tried computer systems for experience transfer, claim that these systems do not work according to their intentions. Transferring experience has to do with a lot more than having the right computer system. Nevertheless, many companies seem to rely heavily on ICT in their approach to organisational knowledge management. We argue that technology is a tool rather than the foundation on which experience transfer rests. Social and organisational factors also have to be in place in order to transfer knowledge management between projects.
